Organiser's Thanks and Comments:
Thanks to everyone for turning up and making the event worthwhile.  Special mentions:
Helpers - Thanks to Maureen and John for manning the start/finish and Cath for doing a highly creditable job of managing registration.  Also John for checking the controls
Venue - Haslingden cricket club proved to be a very good venue for the event.  Beforehand, we sensed they were not sure what to expect but by the end of the night they seemed to understand orienteering that little bit better!  Hopefully we’ll be back in the near future for another event.

Competition - As a new area, there were a lot of unknowns associated with the event.  Was the area suited, was it too big, etc.  The event was the outlier of the series (furthest from SROC centre) and it was also only 3 days before the British Champs.  This claimed a substantial number of event regulars.  But it was great to see that half of the competitors were new to street-o.  Let us know what you thought of the event on the messageboard and also tell your running club mates about the format.  It’s incredibly easy to organise these things once you have the map produced.
Baby - The main unknown for us organisers was the baby that had a due date of 27th Feb.  We did toy with swapping the event with any of events 7-10, but figured that “sods law” would find a way of applying itself if we tried to be too clever.  Instead we relied on good old statistical probably in that first babies have a 70% likelihood of being late.  However, I did have to ask Cath not to up her dose of raspberry leaf in the run-up to the event (one for Sue Roome)…
Controls - Out of the 50 controls, only 2 had more than one person recording an error.  Of these, number 33 seemed to be the main source of contention with 3 instances out of 17 recording 916 instead of the desired 915.  There were a number of telegraph poles in the area but both John and myself recorded 915 in checking (I visited it both in daytime and at night).  The number was in black ink, so I am afraid it is ‘close but no cigar’ on that one!
Apologies - The main problem on the night was the blocking off of the dual carriageway crossing near number 18.  This was due to a repair to a gas mains following an explosion before Christmas (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/7795427.stm for background).  This was not going on when both John and myself checked the controls.  Glenys was the only person to suffer badly from this, having had this as her intended route to get back.  To allow for this, her time penalties for the event have been waived.
Future Use - I think this area is a far better summer area than winter with a large path network, particularly in the south of the area.  For this event, I ‘disincentivised’ using these parts by putting in low control values but in summer it would increase the map area by 30-50% and add a lot more interest to the courses.  The area could easily take a 90/120 minute score or a challenging cross-country event.  We might look into putting an event(s) on in the June-August period if enough locals (or others) are interested.
