Planners Thanks and Comments:
It was great to see so many of you there on Wednesday night, and thank you for all your kind comments about the course. The numbers were higher than expected – higher than for any event so far this season, so thanks are due to the pub landlord for emergency map photocopying.
Sorry the pub was so smoky – I can still smell it on the answersheets as I am checking the marks. Unfortunately there is a dearth of pubs in Ashton and this did seem the best option.
The penalty rate was set so that it was worth risking being a couple of minutes late for a high scorer, and most of you seemed to realise this. But, despite what one competitor seems to think, it was not set so low as to make getting the lot a viable alternative.
I consider it the duty of the planner to provide a few controversial checkpoints to animate the post-race analysis. I have allowed all reasonable answers to 49 (flat numbers), as there was an extra road not on the map. I allowed both 5 and 13 as the answer to 63 (garages), and 3 and 13 for 64 (lamp-post). I have given you the benefit of the doubt for 53 (bollards), even though the other bollards were not that close. I was going to be strict with 56 (H fraction) as the hydrants on that road were a good 100m apart, however I’m told the correct hydrant was obscured by bin-bags part way through the event so I’ve been generous there too.

Street League Co-Ordinator’s Comments:
A fine, crisp night, sparkly lights around the marina and the novel challenge of control scores ranging from 30 to 60 (i.e. no 10s or 20s that could easily be discounted). Many thanks to Frances Watkins and Janet Vials. Also for being willing to swop dates with the Nashes at fairly short notice. The extra rush and stress imposed by fitting in a parents’ evening, however, did not hamper Chris or brother Matt, who romped home with an amazing total on the 60 minute course. On his first outing of the year, webmaster Dave Kesby showed that his skills at street league have not become rusty. On the 75 minute course, Steve Lang’s supremacy faced a close challenge from Steve McLean. Perhaps it would have been even closer if Steve M had not suffered an unfortunate encounter. A car slowed next to him, and the occupants fired an air-rifle or such like. The pellet hit his arm. Luckily it failed to penetrate his clothing, but has left him with a painful bruise. The incident has been reported to the Police. Over the many years of street league, it is inevitable that we have had cases where competitors have been subject to unacceptable behaviour by the general public. Thankfully these are rare, and I hope this latest incident will not deter anyone from continuing to enjoy the benefits of exercise and good company provided by street events.
Lost Property:
Paul Turner gathered up the following left in the Waterfront Pub:
1 pale blue medium t-shirt - no markings but label shows 'produced for Tesco'
1 pair 'Quechua' Decathlon XXL black gloves
1 Gelert headtorch
1 black biro
1 pair spectacles
He can be contacted at pcturner@iclway.co.uk and will bring them to
Carnforth.
