Planners Thanks and Comments:
If you thought this was a hard event then you should have seen the map before John Britton moderated my original attempt. The original covered a distance of around 25km which was reduced to around 20km in the version used on the night. This was in the knowledge that the fastest competitors on the 75 minute course are capable of covering a good 17km and the wish to leave them some choice about dropping controls.
Well done to Steve Lang for another excellent run, only dropping 8 of the 40 controls. I later worked out that Steve covered about 17.4km on the 75 minute course (14.7 points per minute and 13.9 km/hr) and Karen Nash covered around 11.5km on the 60 minute course (12.7 points per minute and 11.5km/hr).
We ramped up the penalties for this event to 30 points per minute because we’d also increased the points to 20/30/40/50s. This caught a few people out, particularly on the 40 minute course and Melody and Angela competing on the 75 minute course at their first street event.
Many thanks to John Britton for his considerable time spent refining the courses and checking the controls. Although a couple of the controls were difficult to read at night time we allowed variations on 416 for control 42 and variations on 100/12 for control 55.
Thanks to all who came on the night after what was a wet and wild afternoon which relented for the evening event before resuming hostilities when we left the pub at 11:30.
Edward Mellor
Street League Co-Ordinator’s Comments:
Thanks to Edward (SELOC) and John (MDOC) for efficiently organising their first street event in an area some distance from their homes. A new starting point at the south end provided a different perspective on Chorley – I hadn’t realised there were hills. The dense street network provided a variety of route choices. As Karen noted, in one of our three encounters out on the course, people seemed to be coming from all directions. (How does she manage to run so fast and have the breath to talk as well?) The big decision was whether to go west or east of the railway. Chris Roberts reckoned his decision to go east curtailed his score. Then there were the potential penalties to consider. Mind you, I forgot to look at this until afterwards!
Good runs again by the usual suspects, but they need to watch out for Paul Ferguson and Dave Hargreaves returning from illness/injury and Darren Baker, this time partnered by Corinne.
After Whalley, the Gross Scores League was being topped by Steve Lang, followed by Paul Turner, with Karen as leading lady. On age adjustment, Karen was a clear leader overall. Matt & Chris Nash were leading pair on both Leagues, and well within the top 10 overall. Chorley’s results are unlikely to alter the position at the top, although some people will now be starting to drop a score (best 5 to count) and organiser’s points will come into the picture. Updated league results will be posted on the website as soon as John Ashton has had the chance to do the processing.
