It was a good start to the League with a near record turnout of 38, including several new faces, and our visitors from Fylde Mountaineering. John and Sue had just organised an Orienteering weekend at the FMC Stair hut, and inspired our guests to try Street on one of the few events not to clash with their Winter Socials. John, Joanna and Les did well to keep up the standard set last season by the FMC Social Secretary Steve Wrigley. Steve is in the process of moving to Lancaster, but he and Marianne hope to join us again once they are settled in. We hope some of the FMC will come along with him. ( Ali, Moz and Ian are also FMC members )
We had the expected close competition on both 75 and 60 classes, with Paul T and Karen continuing in their winning ways where they left off last season. The most outstanding performance however, must be that of Richard Davies, a Wesham runner and triathlete who matched Paul’s winning scoring rate in this his first street event, squeezed in between taxi-ing his daughter for her swimming session. Richard please join us again whenever family logistics allow.
Clever streeters know LPs are usually numbered sequentially, and use this to their advantage especially up cul-de-sacs. However sneaky planners search for the anomalies. 8 out of 16 visitors were caught out at Control 21. The correct lamppost is shown N of the footpath, and so is not the one visible from down the road. Now that courses are independently checked, control offsets should usually be correct. On Control 20, as well as the correct LP 22, I have allowed the adjacent LP ‘21 or Yellow blob’, as this is within the circle, and on the crown of the bend if you were fine map-reading and not pacing. Street maps are never perfect but we try to avoid or correct the dodgier areas.
There were quite a lot of other odd ‘wrong’ answers where everyone else was OK. You are reminded to take care that answers are in the correct box, and also not to store several answers in your head, if you too are susceptible to a Senior Moment before writing them down.
Congatulations to Karen, having missed 40, she then found unmapped roads and paths to emerge just SW of 24, and relocate successfully. I always suspected she was as psychic as David Rosen !
My thanks to David Hargreaves for checking and correcting the courses, and to Peter and Lyn for help on the night. Thanks also to you all for keeping the hall and kitching clean and fit for use on Thursday for the WI Market and the Coffee Morning. I trust you enjoyed the facilities, and thought it well worth the £10 donation. The only other expense was the photocopying, and then the ‘profit’ goes to subsidise the end of season food and prizegiving. My apologies for not being able to mark results on the night. Also, I was not able to return the more sodden maps, so let me know if you would like a pristine copy at the Ashton event. Your marked Answers will also be available.
Good luck if you are down the OFD area of the Brecon Beacons for the Karrimor MM this weekend. Jon and Sarah, and Peter will be among those making it happen – give them a cheery wave if you see them on their duty !
Hope to see you all again at Ashton next Wednesday to use the new map drawn by Bob Nash.
