Planners Thanks and Comments

Most people would appear to have enjoyed themselves, which is pleasing as this was my first attempt at setting a night event I was quite nervous. I was especially pleased that it was a dry calm night and a number of people remarked on how nice the view was around the dock (this was on arrival and after their run presumably – I assume they didn’t enough time while on their course).

However there were some problems so:

a) Many thanks to Francis and Andy for pointing out the missing road – most embarrassing as it is on our estate (NB Ian your copy of the map has been corrected) – sorry about that.

b) Two controversial controls
No. 54 – Lock Gates – apologies to Francis, Dave and Paul who went to the control but couldn’t find the number. I can only think they were not in the right place as Andy Quickfall found it (easily according to him) and I have since checked it at night and the plate is nearly A4 size – only 1.5m from the path at either end of the lock and visible at either end even if the gate is closed.

No. 35 – T.P. – this was located down the back alley – NOT from Powis Road which was not mapped as it states it is private and I didn’t want people going in there. The alley entrance is just east of the junction of Powis Road and Tulketh Road. Fortunately for those who noted the T.P. on Powis Road it is just on the limit of the control circle (I checked carefully on Thursday) so they were credited with the marks.  From the results 11 of the 15 who went to that control got it as I had intended.

Many thanks to all those who turned up - we had 36 people out running and only one minor altercation with the ‘locals’ – I must admit to being a bit worried as it was so near to Guy Fawkes.

Special thanks to the rest of Team Nash and to Glenys Ferguson who entered, coordinated and checked the entries and results.

Apologies to everyone for last minute results yet again. Bob got his checked results to me on the Friday of the event week, but I have been pre-occupied with helping Peter and his team overcome the unexpected logistics of the the Blawith and Torver Regional event next weekend.

You may have heard that the original car-park, if it were on the map would be marked blue as a lake or marsh ! We now expect to run a 5 bus circulating service, for possibly 450 competitors, from hard standing parking on the roads of Broughton Forest, to the Start / Finish area. Cheerful David Johnstone, our Entries man, now predicts the North will have snow this week. So do check with the SROC website before travelling, in case things go from bad to worse for us. SROC finances will be battered by our £1000 bussing and the disappointing support for the Blodslitet. Thus there will be fewer Street Prizes ( or smaller ) this season as we must share our ‘profits’ with the SROC Treasurer.

Final late entries will be received in cash on Wednesday by David

At Kirkham a newcomer virtually won. At Ashton, Elaine ( with Ali ) was clear fastest, in her first event with us. Yet another case of a younger guest runner stuffing SROCs geriatric faithful. I hope we will see more of Elaine ( of Pennine Fell Runners ) , to push up our standards and competiveness. It was also good to welcome Preston Harriers KIMM regular, Joe Howard , Emily Dennis from Team Locks’ squad at Lytham RR, and supervet Les Ward from Fylde Mountaineering and WRR.. Please all keep coming back.

Good performances this time from occasional Andy Quickfall, Ed Mellor, Team Roberts and Team Ashton, and note Earl and the Roomes are back.

Did you see Richard Catlow on Countryfile on TV on Halloween, he was the local expert on Pendle traditions and not one of the Witches.

Also big on TV, did you realise that Powis Road ( Control 35 ) is the home of the notorious Preston Swingers club, and that the residents want to get rid of the club only because it causes parking problems !! Was that why we had so many runners with time penalties ?

See you at Poulton on Wednesday, Ian
