Those living up country will see we did manage to hold a successful event, despite the rapid arrival of the cold spell, and after a few worried phone calls between Blackburn and Wrea Green, during the afternoon. The pavement and gutters were slippery, and on the country roads one had to take care to avoid the gritting lorries ! The area and course were well enjoyed by those for whom the journey remained a relatively safe and sensible option.
Janet planned the course with the help of Robert (M10), Lauren (W10), and Eleanor (W10) during
their Christmas holiday. Our thanks to them all, and also to Karen for course checking, and
then rising from her sick bed to be timekeeper on the night, and to all for having the sense to
work from the comfort of the family room and not the freezing entrance hall.
Previously we have allowed anyone unable to get to an event for any reason, and who asked, to
have a self-timed run at a later date, and then to count the points in their league score. I
realize it could be slightly unfair, especially if you chose better weather ! However we want
to encourage you to train, and for us to get the best return on the organizers input. If you
would like to have a private Cottam run please E-mail me before the Lancaster event, and then
we will give you a sealed envelope with map and answer sheet at Lancaster, and you then post
back to Janet after your run.
If you beat Ali’s performance, we will only allow you to equal his score, in fairness not to
devalue the scores of those who braved the elements on the night.
Planner's Comments
The children enjoyed finding good controls, and hope everyone also enjoyed them. Lauren in
particular was keen on H fractions. If anyone is wanting help they are willing to be hired
out for future events.
Hopefully, all those who braved the weather have had no adverse effects after the event and
enjoyed themselves. For all those who were deterred, remember Preston is close to the coast
and doesn’t usually get the extremes of weather.
