SROC Night Street League 2003/2004
Freckleton and Warton (Event 0) - Training Event
Wednesday 8th October
Organiser's Comments:
Thanks to the management of the Ship for use of their facilities, and to Lyn and Peter for helping.
Also to the several Freckleton mappers, all of whom will agree that an O-CAD update of their handiwork is overdue. I hope to become competent enough to have-a-go before your next visit.
Thanks to Peter Knott for allowing re-use of his Dec 2000 courses, with just minimal modifications to cope with changes to several H, TP and LPs, and my wish to offer you the not so ‘very muddy’ Strike Lane, and a visit to the disaster memorial park. The 1944 disaster occurred when a bomber aircraft returning after a test-flight from the USAAF air-base at Warton was hit by lightning and then crashed onto the village school with severe casualties.
I hope this warm-up enabled you to shake out several potential weaknesses before the League proper starts at Longridge. One lesson is to check on the reliability of your lighting systems and batteries. You certainly will need a good system and safety back-up if you come to the SROC proper NW Night League event at Ulpha Fell in November organised by the Fergusons and their team. For Street Night you probably also need to carry sunglasses in case you meet Paul F and his mobile lighthouse coming round a corner ! Other popular errors are covered in the next section.
All controls were visited by someone. ES was the only at No 10, whilst No 14 was the only control everyone visited, with Nos 44, 15, 20, 31 and 32 the next most popular. 4 went through the mud of Strike Lane, whilst only 3 ran all along Hillock Lane at top of the map, including an adventurous 60 minuter, David Kesby. Fine performances from several of you, especially by Paul T. He got 17 of the 30 and 40s, and then appears to have raced home from 30, just in time, and ignoring all but 44
Feedback please, do you prefer 3 result classes or this single combined list? Also, how long do you want to see the map before starting? Responses please before Longridge in order to establish this years norms. Any other improvements?
Contentious Control Adjudications: - choose your own lessons from them.
13 - The broken H in the road was 2m S from my target H which was half covered by the hedge.
11 of you found the broken H, no-one found mine. Broken H accepted.
16 - 5 recorded the correct LP 18. The next LP to W was No 16. Someone wrote 17, had he approached from W and wrongly deduced 17 would be next to 16? Most planners search for such anomalies to check on your techniques - beware. 17 is not accepted.
17 - The ‘unofficial dot’ was nearer the Eastward stub and not the main Southward road as should have been. JB found the intended LP, 2 others chose the LP on S side of the stub. My imprecision, so both answers accepted.
18 - My answer had been recorded dyslexically. My apologies to JB and DK, 324 was correct.
30 - 10 got TP 330 correct, 2 gave 329 the TP 50m to W. Not pacing or proportions, 329 wrong.
31 - 6 found TP 5, one found adjacent LP 6 about 10m to W. Wrong feature, 6 not accepted.
33 - 9 found LP 4, one found H 100 on opposite side of the road. Wrong feature, not accepted.
36 - 5 found LP 9, one gave LP 7, the next LP about 100m to W. The map shows a slight bend opposite LP 9. LP 7 was at mid of the W straight, whilst LP 9 mid of whole road and adjacent to to mapped lay-by, and opposite the mapped footpath. 7 not accepted.
39 - PT found correct TP 6, 2 others recorded it as 4. It was the 4th TP from the E. Was it insufficient lighting? or carelessness. 4 not accepted.
48 - PF gave the H as 4 / 0, the complete items on the H, whilst 2 others interpreted the defaced H as the probable 140 / 0. Both versions accepted.
