fantastic weather! Thanks to anyone who organised this after Saturday night's forecast! People must have known it would be good weather since nearly 300 people ran. It was great to see so many schools participating following a potentially confusing double week of half-term. Thanks to Chris Sutcliffe, Richard Tiley and Steve McLean for rallying the troops. Thanks to the team system, the organisation on the day went very smoothly. Everyone took on their roles exceptionally well, giving consideration to details that I would otherwise have over-looked - a great credit to the system. Thanks to all the team helpers, and especially Jane Collins, Sue Harding, Martyn Roome, Chris Roberts and Keith Hulme. This was my first time at organising a large event and so I was expecting to experience a steep learning curve leading up to the day. And what was that learning curve? To remain very flexible, to build contingency into everything, to keep in constant communication and to write EVERYTHING down! Typical project management skills! I think I also learned that it is important for everyone involved to have a sense of what everyone else is supposed to do. I'm not sure that we had that for this event, which meant greater reliance on the project management skills! But I also learned that as an organiser, there are plenty of people who are willing to offer significant guidance and support. So thanks to the committee members who did so much of the infrustructural work for the event - Roy McGregor, Alex Finch, Brian Jackson and Sarah Watkins. And special thanks to Jon Carberry and Chris Roberts, who went out of their way to guide and support me. I'm sure that all those future organisers, who are currently just waiting in the wings, are keen to know that everyone in the club is keen and willing to help! Finally thanks to Ken, the Planner, for working so closely with me on the event. I think that 1 week ago, I would have suggested that the obsticles in preparing for this were too great for it to be worth doing it again. But so many people enjoyed running on the area, that it demands we keep it as an important club area. Dave Kesby Nicky Nook C4 event Planners Report> Nicky Nook, an underlined apple of 250m high hill and 3kilometre Grize Dale valley complete with the wet patch of Grizedale reservoir. Pheasants, partridges and lead shot frustrated our full use of the map. Start and finish within 150meters of each other was a help to accompanying adults and the white and yellow courses contained within one wall hopefully helped those affected. The steep climb out of Grize Dale (as written on the OS map) was very uncomfortable for some but made easier by the rutted tracks left over from the despoiling of Nicky Nook by a motorcycle scramble event last year. Those who travelled along the south side of Grizedale Brook were entertained by the Beech trees and shed leaves and crossed, perhaps unknowingly, the Thirlmere aquaduct delivering siphoned water to members of MDOC. Thanks to the children for their enthusiasm and to their parents for their forebearance. To all those who helped, organised and controlled me I thank from the bottom of my E-card. Ken Taylor Controllers Comments Congratulations to Ken for planning and Dave for organising a successful event in the face of considerable obstacles. The last permission was not obtained until the last minute and the out of bounds areas were extensive and subject to considerable negotiation by Ken. Despite much effort I could not find a controller and volunteered myself – knowing that I would be away the previous week. The tightness of the timetable meant that John Denmark had to do a substantial amount of work on helping Ken to preparing the paperwork and checking it whilst I was away. Also Andy Quickfall gave Ken and I valuable advice on the controlling aspects. Many thanks to John and Andy. The terrain did not lend itself to a White course but by using tape and streamers this proved possible. Control 10 proved all too easy to miss out when no. 11 was already in view and this accounted for most of the substantial number of disqualifications. Control 108 (Eastern Re-entrant) attracted some comments. The map could have been better around here and the re-entrant’s location relative to the big L-shaped re-entrant to the North was open to alternative interpretation. I had identified the big re-entrant as an alternative site and it still had my tag at the top of it. However, I decided to keep to the feature proposed by the planner. The good weather made for some very enjoyable visits to Nicky Nook and one of the great joys was running through the woods on the south side of the map. Sadly, only the Green, Blue and Brown courses got into this area. Brian Jackson
