SROC Club Handicap Event: Wellington Wood, Saturday 1st February 2020
This event determines the 2020 Club Handicap Champion, currently James Bellarby, and is based on individual performances over the recent past. It is designed to give everyone a chance of winning, typically in a time of around 35 minutes.
Location: GR SD 514 547.
Wellington Wood is NW of Dolphinholme Village and accessed via Starbank Lane. This road links Five Lane Ends (from Galgate) with Four Lane Ends (from Dolphinholme). Parking will be on Starbank Lane, towards the Galgate end. Though not busy it is narrow, so please park straddling the soft verge and the hard road surface, allowing other users to pass. The fewer cars the better, so please share transport wherever possible.
Registration:
This will open at 12.15 pm and close at 12.45. Maps, rolled and sealed, will be given out at Registration. Please don’t look at your map until told to do so at the start! At 12.50 we will gather and proceed to the mass start, aiming to start close to 1.00 pm.
Terrain:
Wellington Wood is a relatively small area of deciduous woodland, much delightful but with some areas of undergrowth, marshes and brambles. In the past few years most of the rhododendrons have been taken out and the remaining green areas are largely holly bushes. For a relatively small area there are a surprising number of interesting features; but few runners will finish with dry feet!
Courses will go from less technical/shorter to technical/longer, varying between 1.5 km and 4.5 km. Climb is negligible.
Social and Prize-giving:
After your run, please be sure to download straight away so we can be sure all runners have returned safely. Then return to your car to change and make your way to the Village Hall at Dolphinholme for the social and prize-giving.
Courses will go from less technical/shorter to technical, depending on handicap, but have been planned to be completed in around 35 minutes. This should mean most will arrive by around 2.00 pm. Please bring food for the Jacob’s Join, and any trophies, suitably engraved.
Dolphinholme Village Hall is in the centre of the village in Greaves Hill Lane, post-code LA2 9AJ. From the double roundabout heading south, go past the primary school and stay left where the road bends. The hall is on the left just after the church.
