The event commemorates the first-ever orienteering event in England, held during the summer of 1963 at Whitewell. On that occasion, 17 competitors ran a 6.5 mile course, the winning time by Peter Booth of Bury &Ratcliffe Harriers being 1 hour 9 minutes and 45 seconds.
Whilst we can’t replicate perfectly that event, we’ve come as close as possible to doing so. This one is also centred on Whitewell and covers the same terrain, but to the south of the river Ribble.
Course:
Two courses are offered:
(a) Challenge course. This will be 6.5 miles and run on a 1:10,000 black & white map using pin punches. The challenge is to beat Peter Booth’s time.
(b) Score course. This will be for 60 minutes with a 1:10,000 coloured map using SI.
Terrain:
Both courses will be run over the scenic New Laund and Long Knots, with the Challenge course extending into Dinkling Green Hey. The views from the top of the knots are breath-taking. The area is highly runnable, mostly grassy open fell, sprinkled with crags and quarries.
Entries:
Via Fabian on a first-come basis. Seniors £6.00/Juniors£2.00. Entry fee includes parking and refreshments. As this is an ecologically-sensitive area we are limited to an entry of 100. Entries will close once this limit has been reached.
