Carnforth Family Orienteering Festival
Over 200 children took part in the inaugural Carnforth Family
Orienteering Festival in Happy Mount Park (Tuesday 29th April). The six
schools represented are part of the Heysham Schools Sports partnership.
The challenge was to find up to 20 control points positioned throughout
the park using a detailed map with the children free to choose their own
routes between controls. Fastest were Ellie Kerr and Megan Peet-Farrow
from Silverdale, finding all 20 in 17:00. Rob Letcher and Charlie
Plummer, also from Silverdale, finished 2nd in 19:45 just 3 seconds
ahead of Nether Kellet's Jodie Davies and Alice Mead.
The best 3 pairs from each school scored for the team event with the lowest total winning. This was a very close affair with Wilson's Endowed finishing 3rd with 24 points, Silverdale runners up with 22 points and Carnforth North Road winning by the narrowest of margins with 21 points. School Sports Coordinator at Carnforth High Mark Edwards organised the festival supported by local orienteering club SROC. Mark said, "It was great seeing so many enthusiastic children taking part today so we certainly plan to run similar events in future and further develop the Partnership's links with SROC, orienteering's current Club of the Year."
